In reply to <a href="/etsy-case-study-part-1-naming-and-opening-your-etsy-shop/#comment-4498">Chad Trent</a>.

Wow. Chad Trent. Barrel of sunshine!

Frankly, I disagree, Mr. Trent. I, too, am a graphic designer. It's NOT hard for a lot of creative people.

Often people make their professions out to be something only a person with a PhD can handle. Not so. Sure, there are "good" graphic designers and "bad" graphic designers, but graphic design is, in essence, art. Art is fairly subjective.

The biggest difference between my graphic designing self and my non-designing friends who are both creative and business minded (ie- 90% of the etsy population) is that I have the experience to only do a design once and get exactly what I was going for. When my friends tinker, they eventually land where they want to be. It just takes them longer.

(Oh, and the typo comment was just rude.)

In reply to <a href="/etsy-case-study-part-1-naming-and-opening-your-etsy-shop/#comment-4496">Mandi Grant</a>.

I have no problem with people doing things themselves. I have an Etsy store myself as does my wife and my daughter. My issue was with you saying “If you’ve never tried your hand at graphic design before, it’s not hard – but plan to spend a few hours getting the hang of it.”

Putting some text over an image is not hard. But that's not graphic design. Graphic design is communicating a message. And not only is it hard, it takes years to learn to do effectively.

Just like people on Etsy spending months or years learning the skills required to make what they sell. Professional designers spend years learning what it takes to effectively communicate the message that their clients want to get out there.

I actually really appreciate your article. I just think taking a shot at the design community (as your new reworded paragraph does) doesn't fit in with the spirit of your article or the spirit of Etsy.

Oh, and there's a typo in your new paragraph...

Hello Chad,

Thank you for your comment. I considered it carefully and have re-written the paragraph to clarify what I was hoping to communicate with it.

It would be outside the spirit of this blog to not first encourage craft sellers to first try the DIY route when it comes to banners. It's a "do it yourself" blog. If it wasn't, I'd tell people to hire a professional photographer for their shop photography as well.

For the vast majority of beginner Etsy sellers (which is who this article is for), a DIY banner is sufficient. There are lots of good, free tools on the web that let you put text over an image and adjust it until you like it. Etsy crafters are artisans themselves and have a developed sense of how to make look something good. If pointed at the right tools, I believe the DIY route is completely viable for many people hoping to sell on Etsy, especially beginners. Some of the top shops are using what I think look like DIY banners, and they're doing fine.

I would like to ask that you reassess your comment: "If you’ve never tried your hand at graphic design before, it’s not hard – but plan to spend a few hours getting the hang of it."

As someone who has worked in the graphic design field for 25 years, I can say that that statement is inaccurate at best. Sure, in a few hours you can maybe figure out the basics of a piece of software and may be able to cobble together a rudimentary web banner. But you will not be doing graphic design.

Typing words into google and mimicking what comes up is not the way to practice good design either. It does not honor the creative process, and also opens people up to copyright infringement issues.

Your comments are similar to saying "get a screwdriver and mess around with it for a couple hours. In no time you'll be able to rebuild your car's transmission". Having the tools to do something and being able to do them effectively and professionally are two completely different things. That's why there are 4 year programs at colleges to teach graphic design. If it was "not that hard" everyone would be doing it and there would be no college programs or professional designers.
